“Place” is the naming convention in Gimbal Manager for a Gimbal-defined construct that allows you to create a set of boundaries and triggers for a specific geographic area. Creating Places is the primary function to establish your framework and workflow in Gimbal Manager. Places allow you to build and define boundaries that will in turn allow you to capture audience movement and design Experiential marketing. Places can be built as a single geofence and/or a single beacon/series of beacons. Thus, when you create a Place in Gimbal Manager you can draw a geofence and/or choose a single/set of beacons to define the Place. Gimbal believes that a “Place” represents a distinct, singular, location in the physical world, hence we do not allow for multiple geofences to be added to one “Place.” When devices move about the world and enters a Place, Gimbal captures their Place Entry and their Place Exit.
Below are some screenshots of the three types of places and how a place entry or exit is determined.
1. Single Geofence
A geofence can be either polygonal or radial in shape.
In your mobile application:
Place Entry: Generated when a user enters the Geofence.
Place Exit: Generated when a user exits the Geofence
USE CASES:
- A retailer geofences their store
- A stadium creates a polygonal geofence around their parking lot
2. Beacons
A place can be comprised of a single beacon or multiple beacons.
In your mobile application:
Place Entry: Generated when a user comes into proximity of any of the beacons in the Place.
Place Exit: Generated when a user leaves proximity of all of the beacons in the Place.
USE CASES:
- A bank has a beacon or multiple beacons to capture entry and exit
3. Geofence & Beacons
The last place type can include a geofence and one or more beacons.
In your mobile application:
Place Entry: Generated when a user enters the geofence or proximity of any of the beacons in the Place.
Place Exit: Generated when a user exits the geofence and proximity of all of the beacons in the Place.
USE CASES:
- A hotel has multiple beacons and a geofence around their pool area
Best Practices for Places
Places are shared across apps within ONE organization, so different teams within one organization can access the same Places that have been built. Note that Places CANNOT be shared across multiple organizations, so you will need to create them separately for each organization. Places can be created and edited by any Account type, so there are no locks or restrictions once Places have been created.
